Mentioned in 1313 in a notarial deed, the Registre d'Anniviers, Humagne Blanche is one of the oldest Valais grape varieties. Popular tradition lends it Roman origins, and its particularly high iron content has earned it the nickname "the wine of childbirth". Modern research, however, has disproved both these claims. A variety found only in Valais, Humagne Blanche, which bears no relation to its namesake Humagne Rouge, almost disappeared during the 20th century due to its low productivity and susceptibility to vine pests.
