In 1288, Bishop Boniface de Challant founded a rectorate on the altar of the Most Holy Trinity in Sion. The first episcopal palace adjoined the church of Saint Pierre, where the Valère theater now stands, and the chapel was directly opposite. In the mid-17th century, a visit by the bourgeoisie found it in ruins and totally destroyed. Anxious to restore it to its former splendor, Adrien IV de Riedmatten had it rebuilt and the rectorate attached to it raised. In the mid-18th century, the Rectorate donated its chapel and the rector's house to the town of Sion, to enable the creation of the college.Le Rectorat de la très sainte Trinité is a church foundation whose purpose, in addition to maintaining a rector, is to have masses said in perpetuity for the august Valaisan Fatherland. This estate is the oldest in the Valais, cadastralized in 1288 according to cantonal archives.Fendant remains the king of Valaisan whites. It occupies a third of the wine-growing area of the canton of Valais and is the ambassador of Swiss white wines beyond its borders.
