The name Humagne Rouge appears for the first time in an inventory of grape varieties grown in Fully around 1900. For some twenty years now, it has been known that this grape variety is identical to Cornalin from Valle d'Aosta. An identity recently confirmed by DNA tests. Humagne Rouge is the result of a natural cross between Cornalin from Valais and an unknown grape variety. Humagne Rouge almost disappeared from the Valais, with only 5 or 6 plots remaining in the 1960s. Renewed interest from the 1980s onwards enabled Humagne Rouge to take its rightful place among the traditional Valais grape varieties. For the past two decades, Humagne Rouge has been enjoying a resurgence of interest, and its cultivated area is increasing year on year.
Slow maceration over 23 days gently extracts the color and tannins responsible for the structure of this red wine. An eight-month ageing in vats, during which the second fermentation takes place, concludes the elaboration of this specialty.
