Born on the shores of Lake Geneva, Chasselas has kept its old Valais name of Fendant. The name comes from the fact that the ripe berry splits under the pressure of a finger. Introduced to the canton in the 19th century, Fendant became the main regional grape variety after the vineyards were rebuilt following the phylloxera crisis.
